Abdi Hajji Hussein – AHN News Correspondent

Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) – Somali Prime Minister Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed announced the formation of his new cabinet on Friday. Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed spoke at a ceremony held in the presidential palace, and urged the new ministers to work together.

All but three ministers are new to Somalia’s political arena and critics say the cabinet will face some difficulty seeking a vote of confidence from Somali transitional federal parliament (TFP). Lawmakers vote to approve the cabinet on November 22.

Critics like Mogadishu-based political analyst Awil Du’ala say the new government can’t tackle Somalia’s main problems. “Though [the government] has more of time, the previous one had 36 members and governed nothing outside the central part of the capital city Mogadishu.”

Dua’le argues that because there is less than a year before the next election and government, there is little the incoming cabinet members can do.

“Interior and home security and defense, are the most influential ministries. But they are facing more difficulties as the nation is a political quagmire” Dua’le told AHN.

Furthermore, the al Qaeda-inspired terror group, al Shabaab, continues to fight the United Nations-backed government, and still controls southern and central Somalia including many parts of the capital.

The powerful sufi organization Ahlu Sunna Waljamaca (ASWJ), who signed a power-sharing treaty in March with Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government, will be represented in the new cabinet. According to Abukar Mohammed, a retired college teacher, bringing the ASWJ into the government means the group will redouble their fight against al Shabaab militants. The ASWJ controls several territories in central Somalia.

“As you are aware of, there is a Hizbul Islam faction who joined to the government late last year. I think this group must get at least one minister in the new cabinet since they played a crucial role in the last battles against al Shabaab.” Mohammed explained.

Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) – A day after Israel announced its settlement plans, U.S. President Barack Obama, vehemently criticized the proposed construction of 1,300 Jewish settler homes in the disputed East Jerusalem region.

Talking to reporters in Indonesian capital Jakarta during his Asian diplomatic tour, Obama slammed both Middle Eastern parties for not making the extra effort required in saving stalled truce talks.

The American president said that Israeli settlement construction was “never helpful when it comes to peace negotiations.”

“I’m concerned that we’re not seeing each side make the extra effort involved to get a breakthrough that could finally create a framework for a secure Israel living side by side in peace with a sovereign Palestine,” he added.

Meanwhile, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has called on the world leaders to recognize a Palestinian state as a response to Israel’s declarations.

“This latest unilateral Israeli act necessitates dramatic international action for immediate recognition of the Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders,” Erekat said in a statement.

Earlier, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas presented the idea of seeking the United Nations’ intervention in declaring the statehood as an alternative in case peace talks end inconclusively.

However, he had said Palestinians would go for such an option only if Washington agrees to it.

The U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia all criticized the Israel’s decision to approve building of new homes.

Responding to the international criticism, Israel said that Jerusalem was not a settlement, it is the capitol of Israel, adding that its government had never placed any restriction on construction in its capital.
