London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – British Broadcasting Corporation workers will begin a 48-hour strike over pensions. The job walk-off is expected to affect the station’s evening bulletins, Newsnight and Radio 4′s Today.

Expected to join the BBC strike organized by the National Union of Journalists are star presenters Fiona Bruce, Kirsty Wark and Nicky Campbell.

The strike starts Friday midnight and would affect the 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. bulletins on BBC 1, the Breakfast program and 24-hour news channel BBC News.

BBC managers are hastily putting up resources and manpower to provide core news service on its TV, radio and online network for the two-day duration of the industrial action.

BBC Director General Mark Thompson appealed to the BBC employees not to push through with the strike, which he claimed would get little sympathy from BBC viewers and listeners.

The NUJ said that while the union is ready for talks with the network’s management, BBC appears cold to the idea of a negotiation. Aside from the weekend strike, the NUJ which represents 4,100 BBC journalists, plans to hold a second job walk-off from Nov. 15 and a third action over Christmas.

If Thompson’s 11th hour appeal fell on deaf ears, Fire Minister Bob Neill enjoyed some good news on Thursday because the Fire Brigades Union called off on the last minute a planned 47-hours strike slated to start 10 a.m. on Friday.

FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said the union met and came up with the consensus to call off the strike by 5,500 firefighters due to concerns over public safety as the job walk off would have taken place during Bonfire Night.

Wrack said they canceled the strike after observing the work of private contractors tapped to provide emergency cover. He said the contractor are not capable of rescuing people trapped in elevators, hit by floods nor douse burning trees and objects.

Instead of the strike, the FBU and the London Fire Authority will thresh out their labor problems before an independent adjudicator on Nov. 16.

Beijing, China (AHN) – China has unveiled world’s fastest bullet train to connect two of its industrial hubs, Shanghai and Hangzhou. The train will cover the 200-km distance between the two cities in just 45 minutes, travelling at an average speed of 350 kmph.

This rail link will reduce the travelling time by 78 minutes. During the testing of tracks, the home-built CRH380 bullet train traveled at a speed of 420 km per hour, setting a world record.

However, its makers said that the train would not travel at such a high speed but lesser than its full tilt at an average of 350km per hour.

The high-speed rail network already covers 7,431km after it first started between Beijing in Tianjin port city in 2008 and the Chinese government is considering expanding it to over 16,000km by 2020.

“The operation of the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed rail line will help alleviate traffic pressure in the Yangtze River Delta region”, said Liu Zhijun of the Minister of Railways. His ministry hopes to see more than three billion trips by passengers in and out of the Yangtze delta by the end of this year.
