London, United Kingdom (AHN Entertainment) – Pete Doherty has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to cocaine possession in London on Friday. The British rocker was arrested in January last year by the police investigating the death of the 27-year-old heiress Robyn Whitehead.

Whitehead was making a documentary about Doherty when she was found dead on January 24, 2010 as a result of heroin poisoning. He was charged with cocaine possession, to which he subsequently pleaded guilty.

Doherty was previously given unconditional bail, although he was warned that he could serve a jail sentence due to his criminal record.

Judge David Radford said, “From what I have heard and what I have read there is no doubt that you are a talented and successful musician. However, you have an appalling record of committed offenses of the kind for which you fall to be sentenced today.”

The 32-year-old Babyshambles musician was supposed to play in Glasgow Friday, but he has started his sentence immediately.

Provo, UT, United States (CNS) – The father of the classical musical group The 5 Browns has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing his three daughters when they were children.

Keith Scott Brown, 55, faces at least 10 years in prison after admitting to first-degree felony sodomy upon a child and two counts of second-degree felony sexual abuse of a child Thursday.

The elder Brown was charged February 10 for allegedly sexually abusing his famous daughters – 32-year-old Desirae, 30-year-old Deondra, and 26-year-old Melody – while they were just children. The girls, who are part of the five-sibling sensational group, revealed the sordid secret they have kept for a long time.

Although the state originally withheld the names of the victims when the charges were filed, the sisters consented to have their identities released. They wanted their father to take responsibility for his actions, and felt that he should have a serious punishment.

The incidents allegedly happened between November 1990 and October 1992, and from March 1997 to March 1998.

According to Salt Lake Tribune, the sisters decided to come forward upon learning that Brown planned to manage other child musicians.

Brown’s lawyer said that he decided to plea guilty after nearly six months of negotiations between their camp and the prosecutors.

Lawyer Steven Shapiro said, “Today was the next step in a very long process of accountability for a reprehensible act,” adding that the plea will minimize the damage a public trial might cause the family.

Brown managed his children’s career until 2008. The 5 Browns also include their brothers Gregory and Ryan.

Pembroke Pines, FL, United States (AHN) – The United States Postal Service is set to reduce the number of its offices by 2,000 this year as the agency can no longer afford to operate them.

USPS spokeswoman Debbie Fetterly on Monday cited falling revenues as the reason for the planned closure of the 2,000 offices nationwide. She admitted that the postal service is losing out to the Internet as people prefer e-mail more than the traditional mail.

The USPS funds its operation through earnings from stamps sale and other postal services.

Most of the postal offices to be closed are in the rural areas and have low volumes of mails handled, according to Fetterly. However, she did not identify the sites saying these will have to be determined through 57 steps that will take from six months to a year to complete.

Factors to be considered in closing a post office include cost of operation, revenue and proximity to stores and gas stations that offer postal services.

The USPS initially planned to close 3,000 offices nationwide.

Canada Post Vice President for Human Resources Lynn Palmer said in a 2005 statement, “That any wage gap that may have existed in the past was due to the collective bargaining power of two different unions operating in distinct work areas and that it had nothing to do with gender discrimination.”

In 2005, the tribunal ruled in favor of PSAC. However, in 2008 a Federal Court overruled the tribunal’s decision. The Federal Court of Appeal upheld in February the Federal Court’s decision, prompting the PSAC to elevate the matter to the Supreme Court.
